Can Professional still be Funky?

this is a question i've bin asking foir a while now and i dont seem to be able to get it right from what ive seen things that look professional to me look very boring and things that look funky and cool to me dont seem very proffesional where is the balance so i scale down the colours or put things in a certain font to achieve the proffesional look but then how far is there between scaled down and boring i think thres a fine line and i dont have a clue where i am hopefully the more i practise the better ill get!
